- Flashback! | Galloway Station
Flashback with Ed Moore, former reporter for the Edson Leader, as he takes you on a journey through captivating newspaper headlines of the past! Flashback A look back at Edson and Area history by Ed Moore Oil! The Western Signal newspaper announced that word had been received that oil had been struck at the No. 1 well at Erith, south of Edson, on January 11. After an initial drilling at 14,000 feet, another hole was bored and drillers struck pay dirt at 5,400 feet. At press time, the quality of the oil had not been determined. New Edson United Church Dedicated A front page picture in the April 8 edition of The Western Signal touted that the new Edson United Church, at the corner of 50th Street and 6th Avenue, was recently dedicated and open for worship. Spike Island - Should Name Be Changed? The Signal was canvassing readers as to if they thought the name of Spike Island, the housing development in west Edson, should be changed. One answer had already been received saying leave the name as it is. Falling Meteor Seen in Edson The Signal reported that several railroaders in the Edson yard had spotted a meteor. The meteor, which was described as blue-green in colour, was believed to have fallen somewhere between Edmonton and Camrose. There was also speculation that the meteor had disintegrated before it hit the ground. Edson Leader, 1954
