  • January is the start of a New Year, and the perfect time to get outdoors, explore your creative side, and learn something new! Here are 9 activities happening around Edson this month.

    Snowshoeing is a good way to get out to enjoy the outdoors in the winter time. There are many places in Edson and Yellowhead County to try! If you want to stay close to Edson, Wilmore Park is a great location, with many trails that offer a beautiful scenic walk. Want to try snowshoeing, but don't have your own snowshoes? Free rentals are available at the Edson Public Library during regular hours, and can be checked out with your library card or reserved in advance from the Griffiths Park Centre from Thursdays to Wednesdays. Check www.edson.ca/cdprograms for more information on sizes and local trails! Wanting a reason to spend more time outdoors with your family and friends? Join the 1000 Hours Outside Challenge to track your hours, partake in fun challenges, community meet ups and more! Free tracking sheets are available at the Griffiths Park Centre. For the month of January, Edson Youth Interagency will be hosting free 'Youth Hub Hangouts' every Thursday at the Edson Public Library from 3:30 - 5pm. Drop in for a craft, games, and other activities. For more information, go to www.edson.ca/yia   Join a free Winter Walking Group that is meeting at the Edson Golf Club every Wednesday in January. After the walk there will be a social hour with warm beverages, board games, crafts, and more! Karen Shilka is doing a watercolor paint workshop at That Crafty Lady at the Creative Crossroads on Monday January 19, 2025 at 6pm. Everything is supplied, you just need to bring yourself and maybe a friend! Looking for something exciting for the kids to do for PD Day on January 30th? The Winter Wanderers Camp will keep the kids busy from 8:30am - 4pm. Pack a lunch, dress warm, and get ready to play, learn, and connect with other kids! This camp is for kids in Grades 1-6. Edson Youth Interagency is also hosting a PD Day camp for kids aged 11-17, where they can learn to curl and cook all in the same day at the Peers Multiplex on Friday, January 30th, from 12 - 4pm.     If you missed the Christmas Pottery and Gift sale in November—don't worry! The Edson Craft Centre (Potter's Guild) has a Pop-Up Pottery Sale happening on Monday, December 8th from 4 to 8pm and Thursday, December 18th from 4 to 8pm. Tis the season for snacks, snuggly seats, and Christmas movie marathons! Swing by the Edson & District Public Library on Wednesdays from 12 - 2pm and Fridays from 6 - 8pm during December to watch an iconic Christmas movie. Looks like he needs to visit the Christmas Artisan Market at the Galloway Station Museum on November 29 from 12 to 4:30 pm to get ready for Christmas. With plenty of local vendors and artists, there’s something for everyone — perfect for checking off Santa’s list and yours too.

  • Galloway Station Museum Exhibits

    On Exhibit History Galloway Station The beginnings of the Town of Edson are intertwined with the history of the railway in the region. The Galloway Station exhibit explores the area's rich railway history and is the origin of the museum's name. Wildlife Our Natural World Discover the diverse wildlife of Alberta! The province boasts 587 species of wildlife, including 10 species of amphibians, 93 mammals, 411 birds, 8 reptiles and 65 fish. History Trapper's Cabin Trapping is an industry that is firmly rooted in Alberta’s history. Indigenous populations used the fur and hides for thousands of years and Europeans trapping in Western Canada date back to the mid 1600s. The Trapper’s Cabin gives an in-depth, hands-on look at the challenging life of a trapper in Alberta. History Rosevear Ferry The Rosevear Ferry was an integral part of the community and transportation system in the area. This display to commemorate the history and importance of the Rosevear Ferry was built by volunteers Kevin Hollaway (operator from 1980 to 2015) and Steve Parker (operator/contractor from 2008 to 2015). History Erith Tie Camp There were many lumber camps in the Edson area in the early 1900s, supplying the railways with much needed ties. The Erith Tie Camp on the Erith and Embarrass Rivers is used to explore lives in the area's early lumber camps. History Alberta Coal Branch An important part of Alberta's coal industry, the Alberta Coal Branch is a chain of almost abandoned mining towns along the eastern slopes of the central Canadian Rocky Mountains. It was once home to thousands of people, and remains a rich part of the region’s history. Artifact Peerless Printing Press The Peerless Printing Press was built in 1873 and came to Edson in 1928. Many early newspapers were printed on the Peerless, including the Edson-Jasper Signal. Thanks to dedicated volunteer Howard Bouldry, the press is a working artifact! History Main Street Also known as 50th Street, downtown Edson was one of the first streets in the town and held some of its more prominent buildings. In this exhibit you can find the Canadian National Railway Station, Edson Hotel, Switzer’s Drugs, the Barbershop and the Idyl Hour Theatre. History Wop May Explore the story of how Wilfrid May and Detective James Campbell landed on Main Street Edson in 1919 as part of the first aerial police chase in Canadian history! Temporary Display Through Their Eyes Our latest exhibit explores Edson’s early days through a rich collection of archival photographs. This exhibit brings to life the parades and picnics, businesses and ballgames — and even the long-forgotten story of Wolf Creek.
